COVID-19 Discovery!

Vitamin D might be helpful!

Vitamin D might have a beneficial impact on your immune system. It might even help protect you against a coronavirus! Ok, you are probably thinking that I’m fool and that everyone knows vitamin D can help improve your immune system. Well, apparently this is “news” to researchers. I apologize for being a bit a facetious, but I am just a bit shocked that there is still any question as to whether or not vitamin D has any effect on the immune system.

Here is the study… “Vitamin D appears to play a role in COVID-19 mortality rates…patients with severe deficiency are twice as likely to experience severe complications, including death”

Northwestern University

A study led by Northwestern University conducted a statistical analysis of data from hospitals and clinics across China, France, Germany, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. They discovered that patients from countries with high mortality rates had lower levels of vitamin D than countries that were not as severely affected. Northwestern’s researcher, Vadim Backman… “While I think it is important for people to know that vitamin D deficiency might play a role in mortality, we don’t need to push vitamin D on everybody. This needs further study, and I hope our work will stimulate interest in this area.”

What? According to the study, patients with severe deficiency are twice as likely to experience severe complications! Should we really be worried about “pushing” vitamin D on people. Researchers are so obsessed with testing for the coronavirus and racing for a vaccine, they are ignoring preventative measures we can take right now. Why not suggest that people get their vitamin D levels checked as a preventative measure against this virus and mortality? Or if testing for vitamin D is not an option, then recommend a low dose of vitamin D to help prevent severe deficiency.

“Low Vitamin D Levels Pose Large Threat to Health”

“Researchers at Johns Hopkins are reporting what they believe to be the most conclusive evidence to date that inadequate levels of vitamin D lead to substantially increased risk of death.”

“Our results make it much more clear that all men and women concerned about their overall health should more closely monitor their blood levels of vitamin D, and make sure they have enough” said study co-lead investigator Erin Michos, M.D.,M.H.S.

You don’t need to search long to find countless studies that demonstrate the benefits of vitamins and minerals on the immune system and overall health.

Vitamins and minerals are necessary for health. Not optional, not just a good idea, not just for health nuts…necessary.

How can you possibly argue or require further study and investigation to find out if essential nutrients play a role in our health and wellbeing.

How could any researcher or for that matter a child who has taken a science or biology class question the value of vitamins and minerals.

The question is really this simple… “Hey, do you think that vitamin D or vitamin C might be good for your immune system?” If you answered “maybe” then you have matched the wisdom of vitamin D study and you have passed this class. If you said “absolutely” then you have exceeded the wisdom and usefulness of the study and you get an A+.

There is more than enough research to clearly indicate that nutrients are essential for health. Everyone must have adequate levels of all vitamins and minerals. This is not a matter of opinion; it is a matter if biological fact.

What you eat matters, your nutritional status matters. This is what functional medicine is all about! In functional medicine we seek to discover what your body needs and does not need; we work with the body’s natural biological processes.

While we all sit around, face masks on, waiting for widespread testing and the vaccine that will someday be created, why don’t we do what we should be doing right now. Support the health our bodies with information we already possess regarding the immune system and health.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that researchers are studying the effects of vitamin D on the coronavirus but don’t use the research to cast doubt or uncertainty on what has already been firmly established in the scientific community.

How much caution do we really need to exercise around use of vitamin D? Taking a relatively low dose won’t kill you, but not taking it might…according to the study.

Newsflash! Vitamin D does help support a healthy immune response!

The purpose of functional medicine is:

Understanding how the body works, knowing how and where to investigate health issues, knowing what to look for, understanding the significance of what is found and creating a plan of action to reverse and correct the root cause the health problems.

My wish for you…health, happiness and a better quality of life!
