Functional Medicine Workshop
We are all very familiar with the traditional medical model in America today. We go to our doctor and after 10 minutes with the doctor we walk out with a prescription for medication that will hopefully eliminate our unwanted health problem. While this is a quick and relatively easy way to eliminate an acute illness, it is not very effective for more complicated or chronic health problems. With this model, the doctor is not concerned with the underlying CAUSE of your health problem nor are they attempting to restore health to your body. The goal is to make the problem go away; and the only solution is to take drugs.
What most people do not realize is that abnormal function in the body is the cause of disease and drugs do not restore normal function to the body. Drugs are synthetic chemicals that are NOT normally found in the human body. When drugs create a “desirable change” they also cause undesirable changes; these are what we call side-effects. It is unfortunate that our society has come to believe that the only way to feel better and live longer is to take medication. The good news is that we now have an alternative to this medication-model of healthcare and it is called functional medicine.
The goal of functional medicine is to determine WHY your body is no longer functioning properly and restore NORMAL FUNCTION with non-drug solutions. This is what true healthcare looks like; restoring normal function and health to the body. A healthy body does not require drugs to function properly.
Traditional medicine has 4 steps:
- Brief Medical History
- Examination / Testing
- Diagnose the Disease
- Match the Disease with a Drug
Functional Medicine has 6 Steps:
- Extensive Medical History
- Examination / Testing
- Diagnose the Disease
- Determine what is CAUSING the Disease (this may require unique blood, saliva, stool or urine tests that identify abnormal function in the body or further consultation / examination with the patient)
- Create a patient-specific treatment plan to restore normal function to the body.
- The treatment plan usually consists of lifestyle changes, dietary changes, and nutritional supplementation or condition- specific therapies. The patient has more one-on-one contact with the doctor, receives a great deal of guidance and education about their health issues and this permits the patient to take a more pro-active role in their own health. One of the primary goals of functional medicine is to educate and empower patients to become less dependent on drugs and doctors; not more dependent on them.
As you can see, Functional Medicine is a more patient-centered and comprehensive form of healthcare. It does not seek to crush disease and overwhelm the body with drugs; it restores normal function and returns health to the body. It is the future of healthcare. We can say this with absolute confidence because in spite of all the new drugs on the market chronic health problems and disease continue to skyrocket. We are not winning the battle to become healthy under the current drug-model of healthcare.
