FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE FOR ARLINGTON HEIGHTS RESIDENTS

How is functional medicine different than traditional medicine?

When you see your doctor or a specialist, it is a generally a two-step process.

#1 Run tests to so that your health condition has a label or diagnosis.

#2 Once the doctor is satisfied with their diagnosis, you are typically given a drug to manage that condition.

It is the process of labeling the disease and then matching a drug or drugs to that disease. If you have a chronic illness, there is not expectation that the disease will get better, be reversed or that you will ever be able to stop taking the drugs for it.

The tools of functional medicine are primarily centered around lifestyle.

  • If you ate a diet that was more in alignment with how your body functions, would it work better?
  • If you were deficient in essential nutrients and then replenished them, would your body work better?
  • If you were able to get enough rest so your body could rest and repair itself, would your body work better?
  • If you managed stress better, would your body work better?
  • If you discovered the root cause of your health problem and addressed it, would your body work better?

These questions all have obvious answers. Yes, of course your body would work better. Anything that helps your body work the way it was designed to, the more health you will experience.

What Is An Arlington Functional Medicine Doctor?

Functional medicine doctors are medical professionals who focus on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of a person's illness or health issues. Rather than treating symptoms with medication, they look for connections between lifestyle choices, environmental influences, and genetic predispositions to determine the best course of treatment. They view the patient as an integrated individual whose physical, mental, and emotional health are all interconnected.

Treatment plans often include dietary changes, stress reduction techniques, and lifestyle modifications to promote overall wellbeing. Functional medicine doctors take a holistic approach, considering the patient's physical and mental health, as well as their environment, to create a more comprehensive understanding of their health and make more effective recommendations.

Types Of Functional Medicine Testing

Functional medicine doctors provide a range of tests to new patients in order to assess their overall health and wellness. These tests can range from comprehensive metabolic panels and immune system assessments to specific testing for food sensitivities or gut health. Functional medicine doctors are likely to use more advanced testing methods, such as hormone or neurotransmitter testing, to gain a better understanding of the patient’s health and to identify underlying causes of symptoms.

They may also use genetic testing to determine an individual’s risk for certain conditions or to see how their body is responding to certain treatments. Additionally, functional medicine doctors often utilize advanced imaging techniques such as MRI or CT scans to look for signs of inflammation and other markers of disease. By using these tests, Arlington Functional medicine doctors can help diagnose the root of the problem!

DR. SEXTON

Dr. Sexton has been interested in health for as long as he can remember. Both of his parents were medically trained doctors and he decided at age 4 that he was going to be a surgeon. As a teenager he became very interested in exercise and nutrition and his desire to become a surgeon began to lose its appeal.

During his pre-med education in college, he developed a great desire to learn exactly how the human body worked and how to restore health and function naturally.

LISA SEXTON

Lisa has been passionate about her education and helping people on their journey toward reclaiming their health for over 25 years; as a consultant, therapist, trainer, and coach. She believes in the body’s ability to heal, and never underestimates that. Nor does she put limits on anyone’s success.

Lisa enjoys partnering with you to reach your goal, whatever that looks like for your health. When it comes to getting better, her thinking is: “Why not you too?”
