Functional Medicine 101

Functional medicine is an approach to healthcare that focuses on addressing the underlying causes of illness rather than just treating symptoms. It views the body as an interconnected system and aims to restore balance and optimal function to improve overall health and well-being. This approach emphasizes personalized and integrative care, considering each person’s unique genetic makeup, lifestyle, and environmental factors. By addressing the root causes of health issues, functional medicine aims to promote long-term health and prevent chronic disease.  Looking at this approach simply, we speak to Functional Medicine 101.

Your Body – A Whole Approach

The first concept you must understand is that your body has the amazing ability to heal itself. It is on the constant mission to repair itself and sustain life. In most cases, if you provide your body with what is it needs and refrain from subjecting it to the things it does not need, then health will prevail. Unfortunately, many people underestimate the significance of the good and bad they do to their bodies. What are these “things” that will determine who healthy you are? The big ones are diet, nutrient levels, stress, exercise and quality of sleep. As you can see, there are NOT MANY factors that determine your level of health. Keeping track of so few variables is simple; but being simple is not the same thing as being EASY!

Most people who want to achieve a higher level of health and vitality are confused about where to begin. With all the information and opinions available today (many of them conflicting), it can be a daunting task to select a path that will take you where you want to go. It would be so much easier if there was a single way to eat, an ideal exercise routine, a definite number of hours to sleep and a single effective method to reduce the stress in our lives!  This is not the case however, because we all have unique needs in each of these categories. This is one of the reasons functional medicine is not a one-size-fits-all system of healthcare.  You have to look at your whole body towards health approach.

Proper Diet and Functional Medicine

Proper diet is one of the most important tools for health restoration so let’s take a moment to address it. Functional medicine emphasizes the crucial role of diet in managing autoimmune diseases and enhancing overall quality of life. Through personalized dietary recommendations, functional medicine practitioners aim to address underlying imbalances, reduce inflammation, and support immune function. This approach often involves eliminating foods that may trigger immune reactions or exacerbate inflammation, such as gluten, dairy, processed foods, and refined sugars. Instead, the focus is on consuming nutrient-dense whole foods, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, lean proteins, nuts, seeds, and herbs. Additionally, functional medicine may recommend specific dietary protocols, such as the autoimmune protocol (AIP), which further restricts potential trigger foods and emphasizes gut healing nutrients. By adopting a tailored dietary approach, individuals can better manage their autoimmune symptoms, optimize immune function, and improve their overall quality of life.

Key Nutrients

It is easy to underestimate the impact that diet has on your health. It is also one of the most difficult things to figure out for the individual. One person may thrive on low-carb or ketogenic diets while someone else feels terrible eating this way. You might feel great eating a lot of fermented foods but your best friend experiences more digestive problems if they eat these foods. One person MUST be gluten-free while others can have it often or in moderation without consequence. Diet can be very confusing and to make matters worse, you may have enjoyed a particular way of eating for as long as you can remember; but NOW, for some reason it just is not working for you anymore. So, what changed? In most cases, YOU did. Your body is not the same body you had 5 or 10 years ago. You are changing! Your genes are changing…they are now expressing themselves differently. Your level of inflammation if different, your hormones are different your day to day life and stress level is also probably different. Your body is not in the same state it used to be, and it requires a different way of being nourished.

In the same way that you may now require a different type of diet, your body also has changing nutrient needs. Maybe you need more iron or less iron…more B6 or selenium…your nutrient requirements will change as you change.  Using functional medicine methods, information can be collected that will point you in the right direction. There is not a single perfect diet or supplement regimen for everyone; but with some help, your confusion can be brought to a greater degree of clarity and understanding.

Key Nutrients and Functional Medicine

Functional medicine focuses on utilizing key nutrients to treat various conditions by identifying specific deficiencies or imbalances through comprehensive testing and assessments. Practitioners tailor treatment plans to include targeted nutrient supplementation or dietary interventions to address these deficiencies, aiming to optimize nutrient levels crucial for supporting cellular function, regulating biochemical processes, and promoting overall well-being. Recognizing the importance of individualized approaches, functional medicine acknowledges that nutrient needs may vary widely among patients based on factors such as age, gender, health status, and genetic predispositions. By addressing nutrient deficiencies and imbalances, functional medicine seeks to restore optimal function to the body’s systems, alleviate symptoms, and support long-term health and wellness.

Lifestyle

When I use the term lifestyle, I am talking about the other factors your body is exposed to. These include exercise, sleep and stress-management. Exercise is not just a good idea, it is essential for optimal body function. Your body is designed for movement (that is what your muscles are for by the way…yes, movement! Exercise helps maintain muscle, bone, heart and neurological health. I consider the most important benefit of exercise to be the positive impact it has on the health of your brain. Your brain is the master control center for all bodily functions; it makes sense that we would want to do all that we can to keep it happy; and it loves physical exercise. What about sleep and stress management? Now, what part of your body do you suppose regulates these two health factors? You got it, your brain!

Physical exercise combined with efforts to reduce stress or manage it better and taking steps to get better sleep all work to enhance each other. It might be easiest Are you solving the right problems? Handwriting on a napkin with a cup of espresso coffeeto start with exercise and this will reinforce your stress reduction efforts and then you may find that your sleep improves.

Maybe you are thinking that this all sounds like a “great idea” but I  have major sleep issues, or I am overwhelmed by stress. These problems are not uncommon and so we would need to move these issues to the forefront and work to discover why these factors have gone so far out of balance.

Preparing For First Functional Medicine Doctors Appointment

Now that you’ve read our functional medicine 101 blog, you may be ready to take the next step.  Preparing for your first functional medicine doctor appointment involves several key steps to ensure a productive and informative visit. Firstly, gather all relevant medical records, including past test results, imaging reports, and medication lists. Additionally, compile a detailed health history, noting any current symptoms, past illnesses, surgeries, and family medical history. It’s also helpful to jot down specific questions or concerns you have about your health or treatment goals.

Before your appointment, review any paperwork or intake forms provided by the clinic and complete them thoroughly. This may include information about your lifestyle habits, dietary preferences, stress levels, and sleep patterns. Be sure to arrive early for your appointment to allow time for check-in procedures and any necessary paperwork. During the appointment, be prepared to discuss your health history and current symptoms in detail with your functional medicine doctor. Be open and honest about your concerns, lifestyle habits, and any previous treatments you’ve tried. Your functional medicine doctor will likely ask questions to gain a comprehensive understanding of your health status and goals.

Finally, approach the appointment with an open mind and willingness to actively participate in your healthcare journey. Functional medicine often involves collaboration between the patient and practitioner, so be prepared to engage in discussions about potential treatment options, lifestyle modifications, and dietary changes.
