Functional medicine could very well save your life. I know that is a pretty bold statement but it’s true. Below, you will see the top causes of death in the United States reported by the CDC; which means one or more of these diseases will probably be the cause of your death. You will also see that we are NOT winning the battle against diseases that are causing the death of millions of Americans.

Keep reading to see how you improve your quality of life and actually live longer with the help of a functional medicine doctor near you.

CDC: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

“Saving Lives and Protecting People”

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a federal agency that conducts and supports health promotion, prevention and preparedness activities in the United States, with the goal of improving overall public health.”

8 of the top 10 causes of death are due to chronic and preventable diseases!

This is what functional medicine doctors are accomplishing with patients every day. Preventing and reversing deadly diseases.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

“Between 2010 and 2020, we expect the number of new cancer cases in the United States to go up about 24% in men to more than 1 million cases per year, and by about 21% in women to more than 900,000 cases per year.”

Medical News Today

“According to the American Heart Association (AHA), nearly half of all adults in the United States have cardiovascular disease. It caused more deaths in 2016 than previous years…”

World Health Organization

“The number of global cancer deaths is projected to increase by 45% between 2008 and 2030.”

The Bottom Line

We are not winning the battle against chronic disease, the very same diseases that are decreasing quality of life and causing death. We don’t have medications to prevent these diseases (obviously, or they would not be on  the top 10 list). I have not even mentioned all the other diseases that destroy quality of life and decrease life expectancy. One of the fastest growing segments of disease is autoimmune disease; these diseases decrease quality of life, can shorten lifespan and even death.

American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA)

Autoimmune disease is one of the top 10 leading causes of death in female children and women in all age groups up to 64 years of age.”

We need to take a new look at how we are addressing these very important health issues. We need a new health model. Functional medicine is a model of healthcare that prevents and reverses chronic disease. We need to shift the focus from “finding cures” and “disease management with new drugs” …Why? Because this approach is not working! We have not cured ANY of these diseases that are killing us.

What about cancer? We probably all know someone who survived cancer; but more people who didn’t. I think the comment below summarizes the reality of where we are at with cancer today:

Science Nordic

Scientists: we will never find a cure for cancer

“If all the positive cancer breakthrough headlines are to be believed, then the cure for cancer is right around the corner. But that is a far cry from reality, says Dr. Jørgen Olsen, head of research at The Danish Cancer Society. “I think it’s an illusion to imagine that after millions of years of this disease we’ll suddenly find a solution. I don’t think that we’ll ever beat it, but I think that we’ll get it under control so that it becomes chronic but not deadly,” says Olsen.”

The bottom line is that prevention and reversal of chronic disease is the best treatment, therapy or cure for chronic illness. This is what functional medicine seeks to achieve accomplishes every day.

We need to wake up, look around and notice that the current healthcare model is not working. We are led to believe it is. We all have this feeling or sense that science is making huge breakthroughs daily. We have a feeling we are winning the battle against disease…that cures are right around the corner…unfortunately, the facts don’t support this.

This approach to healthcare is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate, or prevent any disease. Why? The FDA enforces its position that these words can only be used with drugs. This approach does not use drugs.
