Are you getting want out of your life?

What does life mean to you?

I want to talk about life because this is why I do what I do; this is why I opened my office and why I go to work every day. I’m in the business of LIFE.

My team of health professionals are not really in the business of “healthcare.” WE ARE ENGAGED IN AND DEDICATED TO THE “BUSINESS” OF LIFE!

I practice functional medicine because it increases quality of life and reduces the risk factors that lead to death…thus increasing longevity. I love what I do…what could be better than helping others have more LIFE!

Life has 2 major parts

  1. Quality of your life…enjoying the time you are alive.

  2. Length of your life…having more time to enjoy you life.

You obviously want to get as much of these 2 divisions as you can. What is life really? Life is being alive and getting joy and satisfaction out of your existence. This might include:

  • Raising and caring for your family
  • Enjoying social time with friends and family
  • Having meaningful work
  • Helping others
  • Setting goals for yourself and achieving them
  • Reaching higher levels of education, wisdom or spirituality
  • Enjoying a health body

What is important to you?

Each of us will have different answers to this question, but I think we could all agree that good health if a major part of life quality. If you don’t feel well or if your body has become a source of stress or concern, then it is reducing your quality of life.

Quality of your life…enjoying today and tomorrow…

Many of us put our health on the backburner of life; something we will get to later when we have the time, energy or finances to deal with it. We will start that new diet or exercise plan next week or next month. We will set up time to meet with a health professional when summer is over…once this or that is under control…then I will take care of myself.

Think about this for a moment…you are putting your health and your body at the end of the line…putting everything ahead of YOU.  We can all be naïve and

assume that everything will be fine, we can put off our health to a later time when it is more convenient.

Here is the major flaw in this reasoning…if you don’t have good health, if your body fails you or worst case scenario, you die; how much life will you have then? What significance will all of those other “more important” things have?

Without a body, you don’t have any life at all!

We can also take a somewhat lighter view of this; let’s say you have chronic digestive issues, you are gaining weight and don’t like the way you look in your clothes, you are fatigued, get headaches, don’t sleep well, have brain fog and losing your short term memory.

Does feeling this way affect the quality of your life?

Does is change the way you feel about yourself?

Would your daily life be more enjoyable if these things were not happening to you?

This is robs you of you quality of life.

Longevity…how long will you live?

Many of patients that are in their 50s and 60s are very concerned about the quality of their years, but also how many years they will have to spend with family

and friends. They are also very concerned about certain diseases like cancer, heart disease and especially dementia. They don’t want to spend years in a state of poor physical and mental health. They don’t want to be a burden on their spouse or their children. It is not just about extending your years of life…it is also important to have excellent quality of life in those years.

All of these diseases just mentioned are chronic illnesses. This means they take years to develop. Your best defense against all chronic disease is to get you body healthy now. If you wait until your health and body has failed, you may reach a point of no return.

What you do now…today…will determine what your quality of life will be and how long you will live.

Hoping your health will improve and hoping you will age well is not a very wise life strategy.

I know I have not told you anything you don’t already know; but we all need a reminder of how life really works every now and then.

Your quality of life and future will be determined by what you do today.
