You have probably been researching functional medicine doctors and other natural solutions for your health problem. There are different names for natural or non-conventional medicine…natural medicine, integrative medicine, holistic medicine; etc. I practice functional medicine, and this article will explain how it works and how it has helped thousands of people, just like you, reclaim their health and quality of life.
Why do I have this health problem?
What caused it? Genetics, diet, stress or a change in how your body is working. In functional medicine we look for root causes. A root cause is a fundamental imbalance or problem that leads to health issues.
For example: if someone has taken antibiotics, they would develop an overgrowth of yeast in their small intestine. The yeast can cause microscopic damage to the small intestine and cause a problem called leaky gut. A leaky gut can cause body inflammation, weight gain, digestion problems and food sensitivities.
The antibiotics set off an imbalance that permitted yeast to damage the gut and the body was not able to get back to the pre-antibiotic state.
There are countless scenarios that can ultimately lead to a chronic health problem. The role of a functional medicine doctor is to ask the right questions and run the appropriate laboratory tests so that the underlying cause…the root cause can be identified and addressed.
How can I fix my health problem naturally?
You can fix most chronic health problems by helping your body get back into balance again. In most cases, your body can fix problems that arise on its own. Not everyone that takes an antibiotic is going to develop a chronic gut issue. Not everyone that gets Lyme disease is going to suffer with chronic illness. Not everyone who is under stress is going to develop adrenal fatigue. We are all unique and we all have our “weaknesses.” The insults our body struggles to overcome.
So how do you fix a chronic health problem? First you need to isolate the root cause that had enough impact on your body to overwhelm it. To throw it out of balance to such a degree that is could not get back into balance on its own.
If we take the example above, we would need to discover that you have a yeast overgrowth in your bowel and a leaky gut. Then we would take steps to eradicate the excess yeast and heal the leaky gut. Helping your body in way will permit it go get back to its pre-antibiotic state.
The main point you must understand is this; if you have a chronic health issue, there is an imbalance occurring in your body that it is not able to correct on its own. It needs some help.
In functional medicine, our job is to find out how we can help it regain control and get back to normal and healthy function once more.
