Will your health be better, or will it be worse one year from today?

Most of us don’t think that far ahead when it comes to our health. We typically focused on our immediate health issues. The nature of our brain is to focus on the present “pain points”…what is bothering me now; unless we push our thought process out into the future, next year is not really a concern for our brain.

If you take moment and project your future self out one, two or five years from now, what will your health look like? Will you be better off or worse than you are today? Sure, there is no guarantee that we will even be alive in 5 years, but that is not a strategy for a well-ordered life.

Building your health “health account”

Health is very much like other aspects of our lives that take thought, planning and a strategy for longevity. Compare your health to your financial security as an example. If you only think about how much money you need today and don’t think about tomorrow, next month or 10 years from now, what will your financial state be down the road? Probably not that great. Your health is the same way, if don’t start working on it now and develop a health-plan, then you will most likely have a lower level of health than you have today.  Health and wealth have a lot in common. They both require thought, planning, work, and a strategy for the long-term.

You could compare your bank account to your health account. Are you adding to it or slowly draining it?

Our brains tend to project a optimistic view of our future. We for some reason assume that in the future we will have good health, plenty of money and great interpersonal relationships. Unfortunately, life just does not work out that way. Aspects of our lives that have value require work and our part. We need to plan for our health, we need to plan for our financial future and we need to work on and maintain our relationships with others. If we neglect any of these areas and assume they will just continue as they are or get even better without some effort on our part, then are fooling ourselves.

I just turned 50 last month…

I just turned 50 last month…my 50-year anniversary with my body… and am happy with my current level of health. My body feels, good, my energy is good, I am at a healthy weight, I sleep well, I don’t suffer from any diseases and don’t take any medications. Now, I’m being totally honest here, I don’t feel like I did when I was 23…back then I had more energy, I was physically stronger, my metabolism was higher and I did not have any grey hair! But, for 50, I’m feeling pretty darn good.

This didn’t “just happen.” I am healthier than all of my other family members and that is because I work at it. I am beating my genetics through lifestyle. From a genetic perspective I am more prone to high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. I don’t have any of these health problems. So how do I do it?

  • I eat food that agrees with my immune system
  • I take the dietary supplements my body needs
  • I exercise regularly
  • I meditate and work on my mind-set and mental health
  • I get the sleep my body needs
  • I run diagnostic tests to monitor my body’s chemistry so I can catch problems early

I am on a “health plan” and I make regular deposits into my “health account” and as a result I get to enjoy good health and very good quality of life.

Some of use need to work harder than others when it comes to creating good health. Is that fair? Probably not, but what does have to do with anything? Holding a pity party is not going to change any of the conditions in your life. Yeah, maybe you need to work harder to keep from being sick, experiencing a lower quality of life and shorter lifespan.

You could say the same thing about money. Some people are really good at making it and investing it and others are not. Does this mean you just give up on your finances if you are not a great at making lots of money? Just throw in the towel and hope it all works out down the road? Again, not a great plan for yourself.

I know I being very direct about this and we all live different lives and we tell ourselves different stories about what we are capable of and not capable of. We all have an endless list of excuses and reasons why we just can’t do this or do that. The problem with this is that it keeps us frozen where we are. We don’t grow, we don’t get better, we tether ourselves to our “story” …the same old story and some of us will live out that story until the day we die.

This is what a health coach would say…

I’m here to push your out of your comfort zone…I want you to envision something better for yourself. I don’t want to hear your “story.” I want to see you changing, growing and become a better version of yourself.

When you feel stuck and want to sit down and just give up, does a good coach agree with you? Does the coach say, “oh yeah, things are little tough for you right now, lets not push through it, go ahead and take a nap and we will try again next week, maybe next week will be better.” No, the worst thing a coach can do it agree with you! Agree with your “story” your excuses, your reasons, your procrastination, with the “lets put this off until tomorrow” plan.

Right now, I’m your health coach!

I don’t care about your work schedule, I don’t care how messy your house is right now, I don’t care how many doctors you have seen already, I don’t care that the kids may or may not be going back to school soon, I don’t care about COVID and vaccines, I don’t care about what your health insurance will or won’t pay for, I don’t care if your tired, I don’t care if your gym is closed!

As your coach, I can’t agree with your story. If I agree with you, then I am only re-enforcing the “go nowhere plan.” I can’t be an enabler…we all have enough of those in our lives. It is pretty easy to get others to agree with our health-robbing excuses…because they are using the same excuses themselves.

I only care about improving your health! I want you to have a better quality of life now. I want to you to grow older gracefully and enjoy the next 5, 10, 15, 20….years. I want you to enjoy future years with your family and friends.

If you don’t have good health, your quality of life will suffer greatly. If you don’t have a good quality of life, then what do you have?

Where will you be in 5 years?

So, where will your health be next year? Where will it be in 5 years? That depends on what you do now, what you do today. Yeah, there is always tomorrow…but too often tomorrow never comes. Starting your health plan will not be easier tomorrow than starting it today…your brain loves tomorrow…. tomorrow is always a better time to start making needed changes in our lives…that is what our brains tell us.

I think we have all lived long enough to know the truth. Change can only happen now, in the present. We can’t change the past and all too often our tomorrow plans never get started.

Today is all you have, and it is all you will ever have to make the changes you want to see in your life. If you want better health start today. If you want better relationships with others start today. If you want a better financial future start today.

Anything you want to change about yourself or you life…start today!
