Tired of guessing what to do?

When your “guts” are not working well, you don’t feel well. Maybe your clothes fit too tight, you abdomen protrudes, constipation occurs and your feel full and uncomfortable. Maybe you just feel bloated and toxic. It does not matter which symptoms you are suffering with but they all have one thing in common; they occupy your thoughts. When your digestive system is “off” it can really take over your life. Problems with the digestive system are some of the most common complaints our patients suffer with:

  • Gas and bloating
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain or nausea
  • Loose stool
  • Bowel urgency
  • Heartburn / Acid reflux

Have you tried these?

Maybe you have tried taking a probiotic or started eating more fermented foods. Or you tried different diets like low FODMAP or Whole 30 or even a ketogenic diet. You may have even tried digestive enzymes or some other form is digestive aid.

Functional Medicine Solutions…

If none of these have worked for you, then you need more information about what is going on in your digestive tract. The problem might be in your stomach, small intestine or large intestine. Maybe have a lack of acid from your stomach or digestive enzymes from your pancreas. You could have an overgrowth of bacteria in your small intestine (SIBO) or a sluggish enteric nervous system (the nervous system of your digestive tract). Your ileocecal valve may not be functioning properly and the contents of your colon are migrating up into your small intestine (not a good thing).

It could be your diet. You might have food allergies or sensitivities or an intolerance to lectins, oxalates, salicylates or histamine. The list goes on and on!

How can you fix the problem…

1. Keep trying different diets, supplements or other remedies. Maybe read a few more books or listen to more podcasts and hope the solution is presented to you. The only problem with this course of action is that you until you know what is causing YOUR DIGESTION PROBLEMS, how will you know which solution to apply? Or which combination of solutions to apply? This is where there the help of a functional medicine doctor can save you lots of time and frustration. Most digestive solutions that do not resolve with simple solutions, like taking a probiotic, have more than 1 cause.

…until you discover what is causing it?

2. Discover what is not working properly so you can fix it. This is what functional medicine does. Let me use another health example: Let’s say you are fatigued but you don’t know why. Your fatigue could be due to low thyroid function, low iron, adrenal fatigue, or chronic inflammation. You could take thyroid supplements, iron supplements, adrenal gland supplements and start a low-inflammation diet.

The mistake with this approach is that you don’t know if you actually have any of these problems…yes, any and all of these CAN cause fatigue, but your fatigue could be due to one of these problems, several of these problems or none of these problems.

You need to identify the problem(s) with your digestive system so that appropriate and effective treatment can occur. We identify these problems by having a face to face consultation about the problems you are having, then select appropriate tests to CONFIRM OR EXCLUDE root causes. That is what tests are for; to confirm and problem or exclude a root cause. This is why many people fail to correct their digestive problems…they don’t know what needs to be fixed!

We all like fast and easy solutions for our problems…I know I do! Sometimes our health problems require more than a quick fix. If you have tried to fix your digestion issues without success, then maybe you need some help getting down to the correct solution.

Better solutions come from a better understanding of the problem. How do we increase our understanding? We look the problem over, apply knowledge and clinical experience from thousands of other cases we have worked with; then use appropriate diagnostic tests to confirm or exclude possible sources of dysfunction.

I wish you health, happiness and a better quality of life!
